Over Haddon Village Show

Held during September annually.

In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, a virtual village show was held in Over Haddon. Villagers also decorated their houses to mark the day the show would have been held. See photos from the 2020 Village Show below.

During the show normally, entries are usually accepted between 9:30 am and 11:30 am on the day, as well as between 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm on the Friday before.

The hall then usually opens for viewing, teas, tombola etc at 2:30 pm

Children’s sports 3:15 pm

Auction of Produce at 4:00 pm

followed by prize giving

There are classes for everyone, including some that don’t take a lot of time to get ready, e.g. photos, a jug of garden flowers, a vegetable animal, a limerick, etc. etc.

Donations of bottles for the Tombola and baking for the teas are always appreciated

Everyone is welcome to join in the village show – it’s very informal, you don’t need an allotment or a large garden. There are usually a wide variety of classes for all ages; e.g. a jug of mixed garden flowers, photography, cookery and several new classes e.g. Do you have ‘just one perfect flower’?

Do join in and help to make the next show another success. Over Haddon proudly has one of the few remaining village shows.

And don’t forget the auction where you can buy excellent baking, vegetables and flowers.

Decorations:

To celebrate the alternative version of the event, villagers across Over Haddon decorated their houses with bunting, flowers, garden displays and scarecrows. People had a chance to view these efforts as they participated in a treasure hunt, devised by Pat Thurlby, which took them around the village.

Limericks:

Each year, the village show holds a limerick competition – and this year was no different! The theme was ‘lockdown’ and these were some of the entries:

 

Jill Beckett: 

The lockdown it challenged us all,

While some baked, others painted their wall,

But when flour disappeared,

It was just as we feared,

B&Q had nothing at all!

 

Martin Chresta:

The lockdown has seen us all baking

And jigsaws we’ve all been making

Allotments have flourished

And families nourished

While for a vaccine we are still waiting

 

Rob Finney: 

We have a quizmaster called Patrick

His clues are quite problematic

We try not to Google

But that can be brutal

In lockdown he’s just been fantastic

 

Linda Savage:

No touching, no hugging, no kissing,

In lockdown, it surely is missing.

Due to Covid’s pandemic,

We’re all now hysteric.

Of our old lives, we’re just reminiscing.

 

Shirley Swaap:

I’ve never seen Bakewell so empty

since we moved here in 2003.

No tourists in town

because of lockdown,

but behaviour in the dale made us worry.

 

Tony Thompson: 

Well lockdown at first is quite fun,

Get all those outstanding jobs done,

When you’ve worked through the pile,

You can sit back and smile,

And wonder where all the time’s gone!

 

Roger Truscott:

This lockdown year has been scarily new

Nowhere to go and nothing to do

Just gardening and telly and reading, but then

It’s time to get on with our lives once again
